Teaching Digital Literacies to Myanmar Refugee Students

posted in: Social Impact Projects | 0

In collaboration with the Common Core, the Centre for Applied English Studies, and local NGOs, HKU students traveled to non-profit schools in Mae Sot on the Thai-Myanmar border to engage young Burmese students who had fled the civil war in Myanmar. Through hands-on workshops, HKU students empowered these resilient students to develop essential digital communication skills for creating podcasts to advocate for their conditions. This transformative experience allowed our students to apply their skills in service of a marginalised population, cultivating their global citizenship while making a tangible difference in the lives of others.

The sustained impact of this project is that it has catalysed further student-led community partnreship projects that have continued to bring other HKU students to support the Myanmar refugee students.
