Eligibility/Responsibilities to be a STaR Mentor

Eligibility of becoming a STaR Mentor

Teaching staff at the University of Hong Kong who wish to become STaR mentors should have already acquired recognition as a Fellow, Senior Fellow, or Principal Fellow of Advance Higher Education (Advance HE).

Participated in the 1-hour Induction Workshop, which will cover the topics of programme overview, the role of the STaR mentor, reviewing STaR portfolios and etc.

Familiarized with the programme structure and the Professional Standards Framework (PSF) (2023), especially Descriptor 1.

Responsibilities of a STaR Mentor

Teaching Observations

Mentors are responsible for observing mentees’ teaching. At least one observation must be documented in the teaching portfolio.

Feedback and Assessment

Mentors must review and provide feedback on portfolios prior to submission, ensuring completeness and adherence to PSF Descriptor 1 mapping.

Supporting Statement

Mentors should write a supporting statement for mentees’ teaching portfolios. Further guidance can be referred to this document: Associate Fellowship – Guidance for Referees

Communication with mentees (one-on-one or group)

Mentors may choose to offer one-on-one or group mentoring for mentees, with group mentoring encouraged for efficiency and peer learning benefits. Mentoring can occur through regular meetings, either in person, online, or using digital platforms such as Whatsapp.

Attendance at Training and Calibration Sessions

Mentors are required to participate in induction workshops and regular calibration sessions organized by CiC that cover the programme overview, mentoring responsibilities, assessment processes, and the practice of conducting teaching observations.
