How do I badge my course?
Start Your Badging Journey
Badging your course as communication-intensive is a straightforward process that significantly impacts student learning outcomes. Successfully completing this certification demonstrates your commitment to teaching excellence while connecting you with a vibrant community of practice.
Clear frameworks and support systems are available to help you align your course design and assessments with key literacies—written, oral, visual, and digital.

Oral Literacy
The ability to communicate through spoken texts that are constructed with the appropriate content, structure and language features, fit for their intended academic or professional purpose and audience.

Written Literacy
The ability to communicate through written texts that are constructed with the appropriate content, structure and language features, fit for their intended academic or professional purpose and audience.

Visual Literacy
The ability to communicate in speech and writing through appropriate visual modes (e.g. diagrams, graphs, charts) and/or visual media (e.g. posters, 3-D printed objects, stage performances) fit for their intended purpose and audience.

Digital Literacy
The ability to use appropriate information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information in speech and writing fit for their intended purpose and audience (e.g. videos, wikis, websites, virtual reality projects).

Gather Your Materials
Collect your course outline and any relevant documents. Don’t worry—if you need help, we offer templates and examples to guide you. Download the badging kit below.
Submit Your Application
Fill out the easy application form and send it in to cics@hku.hk by the semester deadline.
That’s it! We’ll take care of the rest, including peer review and approvals. Our CiC Consultant will contact you for revision if needed.
1. What are the formal requirements for CI-badging?

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
- CI-badged CLOs must relate specifically to at least two of the four communication literacies (Oral, Written, Visual and Digital).
- The course documentation of CI-badged courses must clearly specify communication-related course learning outcomes (in terms of communication-related knowledge, skills and attributes).

Assessment Tasks & Rubrics
- At least 40% of the course grade of a CI-badged course must be assigned to communication-rich assessment tasks relating specifically to communication-related knowledge, skills and attributes, as specified in the CLOs.
- Assessment Rubrics must be provided that describe expected student performance in these communication-rich assessment tasks

Teaching and Learning Activities
The course teaching schedule must indicate what and when students will learn, practice and have formative feedback on the communication skills being assessed.
